ON:
“So after what, 190 hours of interrogation, they decide to try something else?” the nameless detainee said looking at the two people in the room, “A Little girl, and some guy who thinks he’s tough?”
-
John laughed, “Oh, don’t mind me, this is an interview, we just want to see what she can do.” He said sitting in a chair and kicking his feet up on the table.
-
Kelsi rolled her eyes, it was annoying how people dismissed her because of her apparent age, and gender. But she’d dealt with worse. “There’s a few things you need to be aware of here.” She said focusing on her subject.
-
The Detainee laughed, “First, before we start, I want my lawyer, now.”
-
John laughed again, slapping his palm on the table as if he’d just heard the funniest joke he’d heard in years. “Lawyer? Do we look like cops?” He stood and walked around the table, “See here’s the thing, you escaped during your transfer. Your crew intercepted the van and removed you from custody. Luckily nobody was killed, but man, they are pissed at you.”
-
“What this means to you? You aren’t being officially held by anyone.” She walked towards the wall, and leaned against the glass, “You feel that slight rocking?” she said exaggerating the motion with her hands, “You are on a ship, international waters, under nobody’s jurisdiction.”
-
The Detainee had no way to know for sure how much truth was in her statement, but he also knew that they knew more than they were telling, and that his situation had changed. “What do you want?”
-
Kelsi smiled, “See, here’s the thing. If I start asking questions, you are likely going to start lying. I need to get inside your head before I really start asking questions.” She shrugged and walked back to her chair and sat down looking at him. “I’ve been getting information out of people for years now. Everyone is different, but there are some commonalities. Everyone has to be broken.”
-
John had heard stories about her, but had never seen her work, she had an interesting style.
-
Kelsi paused as if to consider her next words carefully. “Have you ever dropped a mug?” she asked, and paused, she wasn’t expecting an answer. “See, sometimes it breaks in half, and you take some glue, and put it back together, and it’s fine.” She stood and started pacing a bit, “But other times, you drop it, it shatters into a thousand pieces, and it’s just a lost cause, you just collect it up and put it in a trash bin.” She turned towards John directing her next statement towards him. “People are the same way. Sometimes, they break early in the process, and when it’s done, they can be put back together.” She turned and faced her subject, “Other times, they are broken beyond repair. They spend the rest of their lives in a dark hole, figuratively and literally.”
-
She was getting inside his head, she told him that was her goal, giving him advanced warning, but she was still doing it. “What do you want?”
-
Kelsi sighed, “I’m not done getting you ready yet.” She took her seat again, “You’ve got a problem. See, we’ve got some information. Not everything, if he knew everything, we wouldn’t need to talk to you. But we do have some information, so I’m going to ask you questions, you’re going to give me the answers I need. If your answers line up with what we know, then maybe I won’t even have to find the glue.” She flashed him her most winning smile, “But if you lie to me.” She giggled, “Oh, well then let’s just say both our days get a bit more interesting.”
-
John nodded, he was impressed, he’d seen interrogators get into people heads before, but she was doing it well. It wouldn’t work well with everyone, but she’d read her subject and dug into his head, and dug in so deep, and it took her less than 20 minutes.
-
A single drop of sweat rolled down the back of his neck. He took a deep breath, “What do you want to know?”
-

<< 20 Minutes Later >>

“That was a hell of a job.” He said shaking his head, “Brings new meaning to sweating a subject.” He said turning and extending a hand.
-
“Thank you.” She said and took the offered hand. “So I assume I’ll be hear about an interview soon then?” she asked.
-
“John opened his cell and pressed the speed dial button 2. “Yeah, they’re in German, get the team in the air, details are being uploaded as we speak.” He closed the flip phone and put it in his pocket. “You know, I love the features of the new smart phones, but there is something about just closing the phone to end a call, the finality of that snapping sound.” He said with a smile. He passed her a folder. “That was your interview, the jobs yours if you want it.”
-
Kelsi accepted the folder and opened. It was offering her a lot of money, but was also putting her on an active team. “Umm, it’s not that I don’t appreciate the offer, but I’ve got no special forces training.”
-
John smiled, “We’ve reviewed your history, and some police files we’re pretty sure are connected to your past. You’ll learn quick, if your interested.” He said and glanced at his watch, “All you have to do is sign it, and give it to the lady waiting down stairs. They’ll set you up, I must get to the Airport. It’s been a pleasure.” With that he turned and walked away.
-
Kelsi studied the page a bit longer and finally signed her name on the line then headed towards the exit.
-
John took one look back at the building with a smile and put on his suit jacket and fedora, “To the airport, Sir?” John smiled at his temporary driver, “Yes, another job.”
