ON:
It was a calculated risk coming to the hotel. Nothing had gotten off the ground yet, so it should be safe to meet, and he shouldn’t have to worry about a tail. Still, he hesitated. He’d never worked a covert meet like this before. He walked in and found a table at the bar he pulled out his phone and sent an encrypted message to Margo, using the established code words to signal a meet. It was unlikely anybody could crack the encryption even if they were aware of the message and managed to intercept it. But a man in his position didn’t like to take chances. He opened the paper he’d acquired along the way and started reading.
-
“Vinny!” Margo exclaimed happily as she saw Adler reading the paper. “I thought Marie said you were going to be down here on vacation, but I didn’t know you were staying here too.” She said as she crossed the room and held her arms open for a hug.
-
Alder (Vinny) set down his paper with a smile, and hugged her back, “Oh, I’m not, but this is the only place in town that makes a good mojito without a cover charge.” He said with a smile, “Have time to join me for a drink?” he asked motioning towards the chair.
-
“Of course, I would love to.” Margo said, moving to take a seat at the table. “How are the kids?” She asked, maintaining some small talk, just so anyone who’s attention she may have piqued with her loud entrance wandered elsewhere.
-
“Oh fine, fine. Tony made the honor roll, and Sharla decided to take a semester off to tour Europe.” He said smiling as the waiter approached. “Dos mojitos, por favor” he said with a purposely bad accent. He was actually fluent in Spanish, and by speech could easily pass for Hispanic, but as he was acting the tourist, he didn’t want to raise any flags. The waiter wandered off to get the drinks.

“You know, it’s funny, I was just thinking about you.” He said palming the box of earwigs into the newspaper as he folded it up. “Article on page 6 reminded me of that Family reunion back in 14.” He said pushing it across the table, you should read it later, you’ll get a laugh, I’m sure.”
-
“I can’t wait to read it. We had a lot of fun at that reunion.” Margo said as she took the paper, carefully sliding it into her purse so it still held the earwigs inside of it. “How long are you in town for?”
-
“Not long, a couple of days.” He said as the drinks were delivered, “What are you down here for?”
-
“In town for a destination wedding. You remember Janice, Uncle Jack’s youngest daughter on Susan’s side? She’s getting married, and she did this mass family invite. Figured, why not, it’s Mexico!” Margo replied as she stirred her drink before taking a sip of the mojito.
-
Alder shook his head, “Wow they grow up quick.” He said looking off into the distance for a moment remembering something. “Well, glad to see she found someone who makes her happy.” He took a long pull of his mojito. “How long are you down here for?”
-
“Just a few days for the wedding. I have to get back to work sadly. Money makes the world go round.” Margo said with an easy grin. “What about you? Marie didn't say.”
-
Alder smiled, “Not too much longer, have to get back to work myself, you know how it is, place falls apart when I’m away.” He said and finished off his Mojito and glancing at his watch. “I should probably be going anyway, have an appointment at the spa up the road in 20 minutes.”
-
Margo nodded, returning a knowing smile. “Enjoy your relaxation time while you can. Send my love to Marie and the kids. We’ll all have to catch up sometime back stateside. Thanks for the article. I’m sure I’ll get a nice laugh out of it.” She said, patting the folded up newspaper.
-
Alder gave a nod, “And my love to yours” he said as he stood up. He took a quick glance around to see if anybody had been giving them to much attention, he watched her leave for a moment, before turning and departing himself.
